The Tequila Shandy Beer Cocktail is a simple, refreshing drink perfect for sipping on the porch, or by the pool, or lake, or inside in the air conditioning (it’s 110 degrees in Phoenix!). Hard lemonade is mixed with a lager style beer and then made “turbo” with a shot of tequila. Light, lemony and delicious, the shandy is sure to become your go-to sunny weather drink.

The Idea:

Dreaming of sitting on the beach, watching the waves, while enjoying a cold, refreshing cocktail? Or maybe you’re running errands on a hot summer day, thinking about what to have for happy hour? A tequila shandy beer cocktail is exactly what you need.

Have you tried a shandy? It’s a classic Mexican beer cocktail and at it’s most basic it’s half beer and half lemonade. To kick things up a notch, why not use a hard lemonade and also add a shot of tequila? If you aren’t feeling relaxed after drinking a tequila shandy beer cocktail, there’s nothing more I can do for you. Except pour you another one.

The Ingredients:

For the beer, I like to use a Mexican lager. Use whatever you like, but I wouldn’t use a dark beer or IPA for this cocktail because you wouldn’t be able to taste the lemonade. Also, this is a light, refreshing cocktail so a heavier beer wouldn’t make sense.

For the hard lemonade, I went with the classic lemon flavor, but you could mix it up with with a flavored one. Adding a shot of liquor to a shandy is referred to as making it a “turbo”. Doesn’t that sound exciting? In this case we’re going to make ours a turbo by using a shot of tequila. Since this is a cocktail, I would say go for a mid-range tequila and save the really good stuff for sipping.

Then for a finishing touch, a squeeze of fresh lemon or lime brings everything together.

The Payoff:

Make yourself a tequila shandy beer cocktail the next time you feel like a super easy, refreshing, lemony drink. It’s sure to become a summer favorite!

If you’re also in the mood for a snack (and what would happy hour be without snacks?!?) how about some cowboy caviar and chips?
